SNOW PETREL DOWN UNDER – THE MOVIE

It’s not often that the movie is made before the book is written. What is remarkable about Matt’s movie about Snow Petrel’s breath-taking voyage to the windiest place in the world (Cape Denison, East Antarctica) is that he had no prior experience in filming or media training.

When he bought his little cassette camcorder shortly before departure, we were rather critical. “Waste of valuable money – you’ve got a camera”. Even during the voyage his filming efforts were tolerated without undue cooperation. On his return he settled into the for’ard cabin of our ketch New Zealand Maid with a laptop and CD player, and taught himself how to edit using a basic movie-maker programme during every available moment.

The finished product was stunning! It was seized upon by Screen Tasmania as the Premiere film for the ‘LONGEST NIGHT FILM FESTIVAL’, and broke all records for sold-out audiences, with extra screenings added to to cater for demand. (During the following six weeks it continued to be screened by the Hobart State Theatre.)

It has been viewed by thousands of adventure-loving audiences around the globe, and now can be found re-edited as a FREE movie (in three parts) on Youtube.
